DS9’s supervising producer, Peter Lauritson, who is in charge of all things postproduction, had a few initial qualms when he heard about the concept behind “Trials and Tribble-ations.” “I was concerned whether we could put our crew on the old Enterprise seamlessly,” he says. “I thought it was a really fun idea, but I wondered how difficult it was going to be, and how substantially the writers wanted to do it.”

Quite substantially, as it turns out. From the very beginning, the writers wanted to avoid creating an episode where the DS9 characters would be hovering in the foreground staring at The Original Series characters in the background. “That would have been the easiest and most obvious thing,” says Gary Hutzel. “But it would have created an almost caged environment, like we were standing around staring at them doing their business.”
